A translation of mania and depression, 2024
Oil paint on canvas, 120 cm x 160 cm
The series “A Translation of Mania and Depression” consists of two paintings symbolising the contrasting yet interconnected states of bipolar disorder: manic and depressive episodes. Using reference photos taken during heightened moments of these states, the series visually translates the artist's struggles. The colours in “Mania” are deliberately ghastly and cool-toned to evoke its strange and overlooked nature, while “Depression” features vibrant hues, subverting expectations. The arrangement, with “Mania” on the left, symbolises the cyclical nature of bipolar disorder, where mania inevitably gives way to depression.
